I am an MD-PhD student in Prof. Hanah Margalit’s lab at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the very same city where I was born and raised.

Our lab is an integrated experimental-computational lab, and in my research I try to solve problems in Microbiology using Bioinformatic tools. My PhD focuses on the characterization of gene loss in disease-causing bacteria during an infection, with the goal of developing of a predictive algorithm of genes that are likely to be lost and understanding how that process might be manipulated. I hope my efforts will lead to a therapeutic approach that manipulates the bacteria into losing genes responsible for virulence instead of eliminating the whole organism. Such an approach could forego many of the current challenges facing antimicrobial treatments such as antibiotic resistance and persistence.

I intend to volunteer with children as part of the Harry & Sylvia Hoffman Program in order to help educate them about the worlds of medicine and health. I believe this will enrich the children’s knowledge and allow them to adopt better health behaviors, possibly also positively affecting the health behaviors of their families consequently. I hope that such experiences could also get the children enthusiastic about science and medicine, and motivate them to consider pursuing a career in the field in the future.
