MY RESEARCH

I study the neural basis of visual awareness in the human cortex. When an image, such as a that of a face or an object, appears in our visual field and remains there for several seconds,  we have a continuous visual experience of this image throughout all this time (keeping our eyes open of course..). However, almost all research into the visual system so far has concentrated on the neural activity evoked by the mere appearance of the image, rather than by its persistence. This leaves an important question to be answered – does all this documented neural activity persist as long as the image persists? And if not – how is the persistent visual experience coded in our brain?

To answer this question, my research probes the sustained electrophysiological activity (EEG, or "brain waves") elicited by visual stimuli of varying durations. It based on non-invasive recordings of the electrical currents on the scalp of human subjects, as well as on recordings from electrodes implanted for clinical purposes in patients undergoing surgical treatment of epilepsy. The overall goal of this research is to help elucidate the subtle mechanisms linking the patterns of neural activity in the brain and our subjective conscious experience.

VOLUNTEER WORK

I am currently co-director (with Galit Agmon) of Common Ground (מכנה משותף, ע"ר מס' 580592103), a non-profit organization promoting gender education in schools. The organization's main activity is providing educational workshops for middle-school girls and boys, raising awareness to gender stereotypes and how accepted notions of masculinity and femininity shape our behavior and beliefs. The organization is based on a dedicated team of volunteering academics and professionals, and is one of its kind in Israel in that it brings cutting-edge academic knowledge from psychology, sociology, neuroscience and more into the classroom in an accessible manner, as well as in its holistic view of gender education, working equally with girls and boys to change deeply-ingrained perceptions of gender.

In the past three years I have also been a part of Ta'ayush, a grassroots organization working together with Palestinian rural communities living under military occupation in the South Hebron Hills area.
